…of dance forms and related activities. With this short film they have set out to show that ‘older people can scoot to many and varied locations for different activities and all the while having fun and scooting safely’. Here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c9z4x5uILUE The scooters being used are Neuron electric scooters powered in the ACT by electricity from renewable energy. There are some lovely scenes of Canberra in there too! Mich…

Java Dance. Swargaloka Dance Troupe (from Jakarta), and Gamelan Wellington

…oro, we saw something that words cannot paraphrase, and should not try to. Comedy bounded in for the third dance, Bajidor Kahot, when the older member of the troupe, Tri Kadar Nugroho, with a mask-like face of bright pink, and two protruding rabbit teeth, cavorted around in his attempts to imitate the lithe and graceful skills of the younger dancers. With the consummate timing of all best comedians, he succeeded in making a fool of everyone you’ve…

Shaun Parker. The epic journey continues

…d Denise and Michael Kellen Foundation. The Foundation, Parker says, has become the company’s ‘Global Partner’ and the sponsorship will help facilitate many programs that Parker believes are anchored in education, social change, and community engagement through the arts. In particular the sponsorship will help Shaun Parker & Company enter the US market. But in the meantime Parker is working towards a program to celebrate the tenth anniversary of S…

Orchids. Foster Dance Group

…male capable of stamping out underfoot the demon devil of ignorance. Music composed by Eden Mulholland had percussive clarity that helped shape the work, and was at one point used as accompaniment, a pluck and two strums, for what suggested a Portuguese fado song about to be danced, but then morphed into more sensuous strings for an all-female Zorba’s dance. A most striking image was the ray of the performers’ fingers shaped like a halo round the…

Yugen and accidental discoveries

…ustralian Ballet. The letters and memos I came across concerned the design commission for Yugen. It seems that the original commission went to South Australian artist Lawrence Daws, not Desmond Heeley whose work we eventually saw on stage. Although there is no commissioning letter, and so far no designs by Daws have come to light, a letter written in early December from Cronshaw to Ingram states, ‘I received today a plot plan from Lawrence Daws on…

Liminal. New Zealand School of Dance

…ers in all directions, wave after wave of walking patterns that build to a committed cadence of the program. These dancers are clean and clear movers, with open and varied facial expressions so we feel we meet them all in turn as they move through the light. Although there are no specific references to the time and places of life in Aotearoa New Zealand, the performance is impeccably prepared and each piece segues easily into the next. Overall the…

Trois Grandes Fugues. Lyon Opera Ballet

…choreographed by Poul Gnatt and Russell Kerr, from our own national ballet company repertoire).   In real contrast, De Keersmaeker’s choreography was energized by its dancers, six men and two women, excited and committed performers, occasionally stepping back for a breather or to adjust their clothing—then up and at it again, full tilt, every move delivered with clarity and light. They danced for us. Marin’s piece opened to music only, in the dark…

…ers in Other moments. QL2, 2016. (left) Gabriel Comerford and (right) Eliza Sanders in Other Moments, QL2, 2016 As she did in Walking and Falling, a previous work for the National Portrait Gallery, Osborne showed her skill in working with a minimum of space and little in the way of design. A wooden bench and an array of costumes was all that she needed to make this compelling short work. And of course good dancing from three strong, versatile perf…

Scored in Silence. Chisato Minamimura

…s worn by audience members offer a tactie vibrotactility of the haunting sound composition.’  Minamimura herself wears such a belt during the performance. How else would she know where she is up to in the music? If the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were not precisely in retaliation for Pearl Harbour, they were certainly part of the same hellbent war, and some say terrorism weighed in ahead of military strategy. Was Dresden bombed into annihil…

The Nutcracker. Queensland Ballet

…ious visitor, Dr Drosselmeyer (Shane Wuerthner), and the story revolves around this toy. There is a strong comic element to the party scene, and there are more elderly characters than is often the case. Thomas Boyd’s set has a charmingly unpretentious and hospitable quality to it. It all makes for a genial gathering. Mia Heathcote as Clara in The Nutcracker, Queensland Ballet, 2016. Photo: © David James McCarthy When the party is over and the gues…
